Kangaroo Island day 1

28th May 2022

Today we are off to Kangaroo Island, Australia’s 3rd largest Island at 145km long by up to 54km wide.

An “early” start was required to travel the 2 km to the ferry. Boarding was at 0930. A quick pack-up in the rain (again), a trip to the dump point and we were off.

The ferry was full, but fortunately not many campers. Only 1 caravan and a few mini campers. And us.

The ferry departed Cape Jarvis on time at 1000 and arrived in Penneshaw about 45 minutes later.

We went straight to Antechamber Bay for a walk on the beach and a tea/coffee. We were the only ones on the beach.

We then headed to Kingscote for a bit of last minute provisioning. On the way we stopped at Brown Beach and American River (named from the time when American sealers camped in the area during the time of Matthew Flinders ~1802).

Next stop our camp for the night at Vivonne Bay. Once voted Australia’s best beach, Vivonne Bay’s six-kilometre-long U-shaped beach is the postcard-perfect spot to soak in the best of island life. Once again, we were the only ones walking on yet another deserted beach.
