Devil’s Marbles

10th August 2022

The day started on another glorious note with the bright sunshine kissing dear Abbey. We went for a short walk to explore the area as it was dark when we arrived. The land was vibrant red and lots of yellowish tumbleweed. We did spot another campervan behind a fence in an official site.

We continued our journey north towards Tennant Creek.

Roads similar to yesterday. Very smooth and lots of flat land with native shrubs and small trees. We noticed thousands…literally thousands of small ant termite mounds.. many looking like small people. A couple of kites appeared to follow us. The markings or their belly and underneath their wings are striking.
We stopped briefly at roadside cafe and fuel station ⛽ however everything was closed until about 2pm due to no electricity. They had lots of interesting art outside mainly made of iron and an amazing statue of a First Nation lady, a child and lizard in the field next to it.

Now for a relaxing night at Devils Marbles.

On arrival the campsite looked very busy and we didn’t have Internet to book on line.
We backtracked to the Devils Marbles Hotel which was close by and it had Internet when we passed earlier.
The campsite is run by Northern Territory Government. We managed to get onto their site and they required us to set up an account which took over 30 minutes. Then we couldn’t find our campsite to book and pay. We found a phone number to call for help, but our mobile phones would not connect. Brian noticed a free phone booth… neither of us have used one for years. Half an hour later we got through to the department. We did have the option of leaving our phone number, however with no phone connection very difficult. It turned out the were having issues with their website (not a new problem I think). They could see our account. The campsite was fully booked. She said if we had a tent we could park our car and camp. We told her that we were a self contained campervan so she asked her boss if we could stay. Yeah. They read us the rules and regulations then we paid the fee of $6 each.

It was well worth the hassle. The Devils Marbles or Karlu Karlu the Aboriginal name is breathtakingly beautiful. The energy is truly powerful. We wandered mesmerized for an hour or more.
Hundreds of rocks, varying in size and many that looked like people or animals.
We even found three that were very phallic 😅🤣.

We enjoyed a magnificent sunset and star gazing after dinner under a bright moon 🌝 🌇
