Adelaide to Flinders Ranges
21st – 25th July 2022
We left Adelaide and, after a short delay while Beverley had a couple of meetings in the town center, headed to Nurioopta in the Barossa Valley.
The first priority was to install a diesel heater in the van because the forecast was for some cold weather and colder nights (it is winter here). We also want to be independent. If we want to heat the van, we need to be in a caravan park with electricity. The heater was installed under the bed, which isn’t ideal because the fuel pump can be quite load. But after a few goes with some sound insulation, it is survivable. Brian got to know the local Mitre 10 quite well.
We had a short drive through the Barossa Valley (though managed to resist the winery cellar doors). After a quick car wash stop, we headed of to the Clare Valley, via Mintaro.
We stopped at Martindale Hall for a tour and a coffee in the gardens.
After stopping in Clare for some provisioning, we camped up at the Blyth Football Oval for the night. It was nice and warm with the new heater running.
It was a bit rainy the next morning, so we took a longer route north.
We stopped in Port Pirie for breakfast, fuel and water at the local boat ramp wash station.
The to Port Augusta where we did some provisioning. We bought sufficient food to keep us going for a couple of weeks.
Scenery all day amazing. Very rugged. The land was kissed with red ocher, native shrub and vast fields with the majestic flinders ranges in every direction as a backdrop. We saw one kangaroo, however about 3 dead on the roadside, a few sheep and cows.
Finally we headed to Hawker were we camped the night across the road from the local pub, after having a couple of drinks at the establishment
